There are more than 200 breeds of pedigree dogs throughout the world today; however this number is continually increasing as people selectively breed to produce more ‘designer dogs’. Dogs have many desirable characteristics, which make them a valuable part of today’s community, being used as hearing dogs for the deaf, guide dogs for the blind and smelling dogs for the police to name but a few.
However, it still remains that the most common place for the dog in today’s society is as a companion animal. Loyal, intelligent, playful and protective, means that today, the dog fits into many households as a family member.
