Rats are members of the rodent family. They are commonly pack animals and stick together to protect the each other. There are many different breeds of rat throughout the world.
In England, the most common breed kept as a pet is the ‘brown rat.’ Due to careful breeding, pets of this breed are now disease free, friendly and intelligent. Male rats grow to between 20 and 25cm long, not including the tail. Females are slightly smaller, growing to between 16 and 18cm in length. and live for approximately three years. They have a pointed head and a hairless tail.
Rats are nocturnal by nature, and are much more sociable at night time.
